Rolex Explorer
The Rolex Explorer debuted in 1953, the year Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first summited Mount Everest on a Rolex-equipped expedition. Built for adventurers, it pairs a robust Oyster case with a black dial and luminous 3, 6 and 9 numerals for legibility in extreme conditions. Its design has barely changed in seven decades, though case sizes have ranged from 36mm to 40mm over the years. The Explorer II, introduced in 1971, adds a 24-hour hand and fixed bezel originally designed for cave explorers.
